Definition of ESG
Apart from the environmental issues like climate change, environmental protection, ESG covers social issues like a company’s labour practices, talent management, product safety and data security. It also covers governance matters like board diversity, executive pay and business ethics.
Full form of ESG stands for Environmental, Social and Governance.
- E in ESG, environmental criteria, includes the energy, waste, resources used, carbon emissions, climate change and the consequences for the ecosystem as a result.
- S, social criteria, address labour relations, diversity and inclusion.
- G, governance, is the internal system of practices, controls, and procedures a company adopts in order to govern itself, make effective decisions, comply with the law, and meet the needs of external stakeholders.
Just as ESG is an inextricable part of any business, its individual elements are themselves intertwined.
Any development project needs substantial investment. This investment can come from domestic as well as international banks & financial institutions.
The investors are required to assess the viability of the development project in terms of environmental, social & business ethics-related risks.
They also need to understand a company’s long-term value creation plan.
ESG reporting by an independent third party provides investors with credible and standardised information on the risks and their mitigations.
Any ESG Consulting projects and ESG reports are developed based on certain national and international standards. Country-specific legal requirements form the basic requirements for any Environmental, Social & Governance reports.
IFC (International Finance Corporation ) Performance Standards (PS 1 – 8), World Bank EHS Guidelines, Labour Standards from ILO, ISO 26000, SEBI – Business Responsibility and Sustainability Report (BRSR), Sustainable Accounting Standards Board (SASB), Guidelines from relevant Stock Exchanges are also used very frequently.
However, ESG Consulting projects are generally based on project-specific ToR (Terms of Reference). A Tor provides detailed requirements of the standards to be followed.
